Manitoulin Island is in the southeastern
part of the Ontario, located on
Lake Huron bordering Muskoka
and the North Channel in the east and north respectively. It contains about 108
freshwater lakes and many islands, making it the largest area of island on a freshwater
lake in the world. It also has four rivers that provide ample salmon and trout for
residents and visitors all year around. This island has two major towns – Northeastern
Manitoulin and Gore Bay and six native American reserves. This island can be reached
by road through the bridge from a place called Little Current on the North Channel.
During summer, a ferry called MS Chi-Cheemaun plies through this island. It can
also be reached by air and there is an airport at Gore Bay.
This island is probably one of the best places in the world for fishing and a person
with any level of expertise is sure to hook one or more salmons and trouts. If you
are an avid hiker, then this island is sure to excite you with trails that go through
different landscapes and ancient settlements. The natural beauty and the rich history
of this island can be thoroughly enjoyed in any hiking trail that runs throughout

the mind and body. The Providence House Center for creative arts has many programs
geared towards kids while the petting zoo bring kids a lot closer to farm animals.
The best time to visit this island is during the summer when the weather is warm.
During July and August, the residents of Manitoulin Island host many festivals and
fairs such as the Manitoulin country fest and Wikwemikong Cultural festival that
can give you a unique insight into the rich culture and heritage of this place.

rental apartments, motels, bed and breakfast inns and island campgrounds. Each of
these accommodations is comfortable and offer pleasant views of the island or lakes.

Manitoulin Island has many farmers' markets that sell fresh fruits and vegetables.
Also, fish is a staple of this region because of its rich fishing grounds. Some

are Garden's: Gate restaurant, Meldrum Bay Inn, Royal Michael's Bay restaurant,
Red Lodge and Carol and Earl's restaurant. Many of these overlook the bay and provide
breathtaking views for visitors as they enjoy their food.
